Tensioner Screw for a Throttle Cable

Tensioner screw

Problem

An FZ150 motorcycle had high idle RPM. The RPM further increased when the handlebar was turned to the left.

Troubleshooting

The tension of throttle cable (FZ150 part number 3C1-F6311-00) was high. The upper throttle cable tensioner screw near the throttle grip was fully screwed down, so no further cable slack could be added.

Solution taken

The lower throttle cable tensioner screw was tackled to add more cable slack.

The impacts of not solving the problem

  1. Increased fuel consumption.
  2. Excessive engine heat.
  3. Unexpected motorcycle surge at low speed.
  4. Harder cornering.
  5. Harder gear engagement.

Notes

  1. The black right side cover (FZ150 part number 3C1-F1721-00) should be taken off for better access to the lower throttle cable tensioner screw. The cover is held by a 10mm AF bolt at the top (accessible by removing the seat), a PH2 truss head screw and two grommets. The two grommet connections can be released by prying with a spanner.
  2. The lower cable tensioner screw has two 10mm AF nuts, one upper and one lower.
  3. The space around the cable tensioner screw is limited and awkward. Use a spanner to break the upper nut loose, then use fingers to further loosen the it. To tighten the upper nut, use fingers first, then finish the tightening with the spanner.
  4. Only the upper nut can be tightened or broken loose with a spanner. The lower nut is wedged in the holder and can only be adjusted with fingers.
  5. A cable tensioner screw that is more screwed down provides more cable slack.
  6. The lower cable tensioner screw is less convenient to access than the upper one. Therefore, leave more slack in the cable at the lower tensioner screw so that adjustments can be made using the upper tensioner screw instead.

Tools used

  1. Stubby or deep offset open end spanner with a 10mm jaw.
  2. Stubby PH2 screwdriver.

This is problem-first learning. The knowledge was learnt because there was a problem to solve.
